Once a man came to a Taoist monk and complained that, no matter how he tries, he cannot understand the wisdom of the world. And since he cannot understand the wisdom of the world, he doubts the wisdom of God. This very embarrasses him, and therefore he came to ask the sage for help. The monk agreed to help this man, but on one condition: he will fulfill his requirements.
His first demand was: to sit near the shore and listen to the river singing.
“This is the voice of God,” said the monk.
So the man did. But in the evening, when the monk asked him if he understood the wisdom of the world, he shook his head.
Then the monk ordered the man to look into the fire.
“This is the dance of God,” he said.
But in the morning again the man said that he did not understand the wisdom of the world. Earth and air also did not tell him anything about the wisdom of the world, for the man could not make out their secrets.
The monk thought for a moment. And on the third day he said:
- Then look at yourself, all your doubts lurk there.
And, seeing in his soul a reflection of the whole universe, a man understood the wisdom of God. And doubts receded, and peace filled his soul.
