Recently, in Western and in liberal domestic journalism, a lot has been written about Russian barbarism against the background of European civilization. But if we compare the moral ideals and real life of peoples, flip through the heroic pages of the history of the Russian people, then a completely different picture arises.
For example, in the Russian pagan pantheon there was never a god of war, while among European nations the concept of a warlike deity dominated, the whole epos is built around wars and conquests.
After the victory over the Gentiles, the Russian man never sought to forcibly convert them to his faith.
In the epic "Ilya of Muromets and Idolische" the Russian hero liberates Constantinople from the filthy Idolisch, but refuses to be governor of the city and returns to his homeland.
In ancient Russian literature there is no theme of enrichment during conquests, robberies, while plots on this topic are common in Western European literature.
The heroes of the Song of the Nibelungs are obsessed with finding the buried treasure - the Rhine gold.
The protagonist of the ancient English poem "Beowulf" dies, "saturating his sight with a game of gems and a sparkle of gold ... In exchange for wealth, I laid down my life."
Not one of the heroes of the Russian epic comes to mind putting life in exchange for wealth. Moreover, Ilya Muromets is not able to accept the farms offered by the robbers - "the golden treasury, colored dress and good horses as necessary." He, without a doubt, rejects the path where "rich to be," but voluntarily tests the path where "killed to be."
And not only in the epic, but also in legends, tales, songs, proverbs and sayings of the Russian people, the duty of personal or tribal honor has nothing to do with the duty of personal or tribal revenge.
The concept of revenge as such is generally absent in Russian folklore, as it were, as it were, not originally laid down in the "genetic code" of the people, and the Russian warrior has always been a liberating warrior.
And this is the difference between Russian and Western European people.
The Russian historian and philosopher Ivan Ilyin wrote: "Europe does not know us ... because it is alien to the Slavic-Russian contemplation of the world, nature and man. West European humanity moves by will and reason. Russian people live primarily by heart and imagination and only then by mind and will. Therefore, the average the European is ashamed of sincerity, conscience and kindness as "stupidity."
A Russian person, on the contrary, expects from a person above all kindness, conscience and sincerity.
The European, brought up by Rome, despises to himself other nations and wants to rule them.
The Russian man has always enjoyed the natural freedom of his space ... He was always "surprised" by other nations, good-naturedly got along with them and hated only invading enslavers ... "
The mercy and justice of the Russian person is evidenced by the good neighborly attitude towards the peoples of the annexed territories. The Russian people did not commit such atrocities as enlightened Europeans on conquered lands.
In national psychology there was a certain restraining moral principle. By nature, a strong, hardy, dynamic people was endowed with amazing survival.
The famous Russian patience and tolerance for others were based on fortitude.
Under continuous invasions from all sides, in incredibly harsh climatic conditions, the Russian people colonized vast territories without destroying, enslaving, robbing or crossing forcibly any nation.
The colonial policy of the West European peoples eradicated the aborigines of the three continents, turned into slaves the population of vast Africa and the metropolis invariably rich at the expense of the colonies.
The Russian people, waging not only defensive wars, annexing, like all large nations, large territories, did not treat the conquered anywhere like the Europeans. From European conquests, European nations lived better, the robbery of the colonies enriched the metropolis.
The Russian people did not rob Siberia, nor Central Asia, nor the Caucasus, nor the Baltic states. Russia has saved every nation that has entered it. She was their defender, provided them with the right to land, property, faith, customs, culture.
Russia has never been a nationalist state; it belonged simultaneously to everyone living in it. The Russian people had only one “advantage” - to bear the burden of state building.
As a result, a state unique in world history was created, which the Russian people defended with their blood, not sparing their lives.
Precisely because such sufferings and colossal sacrifices fell upon him, my people accepted, as their own pain, the suffering of other peoples under the yoke of Nazi fascists.
And after the liberation of his native country with the same sacrifice, with the same energy he freed half of Europe.
That's what heroism was! That’s what a fortitude of people the Russian land gives rise to! And I think that for such a feat even a great nation can decide once in a century.
The patriotism that the Russian soldier demonstrated on the fields of World War II is the patriotism of the highest standard, which neither world nor domestic history knew. And I will never agree with statements in the press about Russian "barbarism" and European "virtue."
I am proud that our ancestors, our heroic ancestors were so beautiful, persistent, courageous and enduring, and we are their descendants!
